Chief Executive Officer - Rural City of Wangaratta

CEO & General Management

  • Lead a progressive regional council through an exciting period of growth and transformation
  • Drive strategic initiatives that enhance Wangaratta’s prosperity, liveability, and community outcomes
  • Inspire a high-performing, values-driven organisation focused on excellence and accountability

Located in one of Victoria’s most dynamic and naturally beautiful regions, the Rural City of Wangaratta is a key regional centre in North East Victoria. Strategically positioned on the Hume Corridor between Melbourne and Sydney, it serves as a major gateway between the states and an important access point to the broader north-eastern and central Victorian regions. Surrounded by some of Victoria’s most iconic natural landscapes including alpine resorts, the King Valley and the Ovens and King River, Wangaratta offers exceptional year-round lifestyle and recreational opportunities, from skiing, hiking and cycling to fishing, water sports and camping. Complemented by rich agricultural land producing world-class wines, fresh produce and artisanal goods, Wangaratta’s unique blend of natural assets, thriving communities and a diverse local economy creates an enviable and highly liveable regional lifestyle.

The Rural City of Wangaratta Council is a progressive and community-minded organisation committed to building a prosperous, sustainable and connected municipality. Council delivers high-quality services to over 30,000 residents, supports local business growth, and invests strategically in infrastructure to enhance liveability and economic strength. With a strong focus on transparency and community engagement, Council continues to position Wangaratta as a vibrant and resilient regional hub where residents, visitors and businesses can truly thrive.

An exciting opportunity now exists for an inspiring, future-focused Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation through a period of significant change and opportunity. Reporting to and working closely with a collaborative Council, you will be deeply engaged in the community and play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of Wangaratta. You will champion strong and visible leadership, provide strategic and timely advice, uphold the highest standards of governance, and ensure decisions are implemented with integrity and operational excellence. As CEO, you will guide a committed workforce, build a culture of innovation, accountability and high performance, and represent Council with credibility across the community, media, regional partners and all levels of government.

This role requires an accomplished executive with demonstrated success operating within complex environments ideally with experience in, or strong exposure to, the public sector or local government. You bring political and commercial acumen, the ability to balance strategic foresight with hands-on delivery, and a track record of leading organisations through change. Your capability spans financial sustainability, integrated planning, service excellence, economic development, and the oversight of major projects. Importantly, you will be a passionate advocate for regional communities and committed to delivering meaningful outcomes for the municipality.

Recognised for your authentic, values-driven leadership, you build genuine and trusted relationships with Councillors, staff, government, industry and the community. Your exceptional interpersonal skills enable you to quickly develop rapport and foster partnerships that enhance Council’s impact and elevate the profile of the region. With a deep appreciation of the opportunities and challenges facing regional Victoria, you will bring energy, ambition and commitment to this highly influential role.

If you are a courageous, visionary leader who thrives on shaping high-performing organisations and creating lasting community value, this is a rare opportunity to make your mark on the future of the Rural City of Wangaratta.
