The Role:

As a Chief Parliamentary Counsel, you will

  • work closely with policy teams and legal colleagues to develop and refine legislative text
  • take responsibility for leading the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel in the provision of high-level legislative drafting services
  • provide the public with access to legislation, including publication of the NT Government Gazette.

 Duties & responsibilities:

The role of the Chief Parliamentary Counsel will be:


  • To lead the Office of Parliamentary Counsel and ensure the provision of high-level legislative drafting services for the Government and Legislative Assembly members. 
  • Ensure that legislation and legislative information is made accessible to the public in the most optimal way.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance and support for other parliamentary counsel in the office. 
  • Draft independent legislation with the highest degree of complexity, urgency or sensitivity. 
  • Develop and maintain effective strategic relationships with senior executives across the Northern Territory Public Sector and other related industries and organisations. 
  • Ensure legislative priorities are achieved. 
  • Represent the Northern Territory at the national level on the Australasian Parliamentary Counsel's Committee.

 The Office of the Chief Parliamentary Counsel (OCPC) plays a central role in the development of legislation, working at the intersection of law and public policy. This team is responsible for drafting Bills and statutory instruments, translating government policy into clear, precise and effective law.
