Information & Communication Technology

About the Company

Davidson has partnered with Barwon Water to appoint a Software Engineering Lead to join its Digital Engineering team and lead the direction and maturity of software engineering capability across the organisation.

Barwon Water delivers water, sewerage and recycled water services to more than 330,000 people across the Geelong region and surrounding communities. Through a major Digital Business Transformation program, the organisation is investing in new technologies, operating models and ways of working that will shape the future of the business and the communities it serves.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineering leader to shape how Barwon Water designs, develops, integrates and manages secure, scalable and maintainable applications and digital services. Reporting to the Head of Digital Engineering, you’ll provide strategic, technical and people leadership while supporting the modernisation of Barwon Water’s application landscape.

We’re looking for someone who combines deep software engineering expertise with strong people leadership, architectural thinking and the ability to balance business value, delivery urgency, risk, capacity and long-term sustainability.

About You

You’re an experienced Software Engineering Lead who combines strong technical capability with a genuine passion for developing people and building high-performing engineering teams. You’re comfortable setting technical direction, establishing strong engineering practices and remaining close enough to the technology to guide delivery when needed.

You’ll bring a strong focus on building secure, reliable and scalable applications and integrations, while creating an engineering environment where quality, collaboration and continuous improvement are part of the everyday.

Core Strengths

  • Proven experience leading and developing a small engineering team, including coaching, regular feedback and supporting career growth.
  • Strong experience across Microsoft Azure, particularly application development and integration using API Management, App Service and Service Bus.
  • Sound knowledge of secure application design patterns, including Azure Key Vault, secrets management and Storage.
  • Strong CI/CD and DevSecOps practices, with security and quality embedded throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
  • Experience using observability and monitoring to proactively identify and resolve issues, ideally with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics.
  • Ability to establish and champion engineering standards and best practices that improve quality, consistency and maintainability.

Also Valuable

  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments, including sprints, ceremonies and continuous feedback loops.
  • Confidence managing and prioritising Jira backlogs, including refinement, sizing and prioritisation.
  • Experience providing Scrum leadership, removing blockers and helping teams maintain focus and delivery momentum.
  • Exposure to AWS serverless technologies, including Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway and SQS/SNS.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, ideally using Bicep or Terraform.
  • An understanding of how to use AI-assisted engineering tools thoughtfully and effectively within appropriate security and governance guardrails.
