About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Officer (Contractor)
to provide dedicated environmental expertise to the Gateway to Bruce Upgrades (G2BU) projects. This is a site‑based role located in Deagon, QLD, requiring full‑time attendance on site, with limited flexibility available on an exception basis. Occasional work outside normal hours may be required, with loading applied.
Reporting within the GMBHU Projects Team, the Senior Environmental Officer will manage multiple concurrent environmental workstreams and support the effective management of environmental risks, approvals and compliance obligations across a complex infrastructure program. The role plays a critical part in ensuring project milestones are achieved while meeting State and Commonwealth legislative requirements, including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist environmental and technical support across the G2BU projects to ensure compliance with relevant State and Commonwealth legislation, including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
- Support EPBC Act processes, including preparation, coordination and review of EPBC referrals, self‑assessment requests, Public Environmental Reports and supporting technical documentation.
- Assist with the coordination, completion and submission of two EPBC referrals, ensuring regulatory requirements, assessment pathways and project timeframes are aligned.
- Review draft environmental permits, licences and approvals as required.
- Assist with the establishment and ongoing management of environmental offset contracts, including development of offset management, maintenance, reporting and compliance arrangements.
- Support environmental approvals pathways, including preparation and review of Compliance Management Plans for the treatment and reuse of contaminated materials, including PFAS‑affected materials.
- Review design and construction documentation, including fauna management plans, water quality controls, site establishment, erosion and sediment control measures, and fencing layouts.
- Review environmental documentation such as Environmental Design Reports, Environmental Management Plans (planning, construction and operational phases), and specialist technical reports.
- Assist with Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) ratings assessments, including coordination of evidence, compliance checks and reporting.
- Attend and contribute to monthly environmental meetings, providing updates on progress, risks and actions.
- Coordinate with project teams, specialist consultants and regulatory agencies to ensure environmental requirements, surveys, mitigation measures and approval timeframes are clearly identified and integrated into project schedules.
- Undertake construction site inspections and audits to verify compliance with environmental approvals, plans and conditions.
- Respond to environmental queries and provide environmental inputs into design development, construction activities, governance papers and project documentation.
- Identify and proactively manage environmental risks and issues that may impact approvals, cost, schedule or reputation, implementing practical and solution‑focused responses in collaboration with the project team.
Mandatory Requirements
- Degree qualification in environmental science, environmental engineering, cultural heritage management, natural resource management, or a related discipline.
- Current Class C driver’s licence.
Desirable Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in infrastructure design and delivery environments, particularly major road or transport projects.
- Infrastructure Sustainability Accredited Professional (ISAP) certification.
