Safety Advisor - South East Water

  • From project blueprint to live site, put practical safety leadership into action across South East Water’s capital and operational environments.
  • Protect the people and communities who rely on essential water services while helping shape a more proactive safety culture.
  • Flexible working arrangements and the potential for a compressed-hours arrangement or nine-day fortnight.

South East Water is seeking an experienced and hands-on Safety Advisor to support its capital works, operational activities and contractor-delivered projects.

Reporting to the Group Manager, Safety & Wellbeing, you will provide practical safety leadership across the full project lifecycle, from design and mobilisation through to delivery, commissioning and handover.

Working closely with engineers, project managers, operational leaders, contractors and frontline employees, you will help identify risks, strengthen safety capability and ensure effective controls are in place across South East Water’s operational and project environments.

This is an opportunity for an established Safety Advisor who can quickly understand a complex operating environment, build trusted relationships and provide credible, practical advice from the outset.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide expert safety advice to leaders, employees, project teams and contractors.
  • Support capital projects and operational teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Conduct risk assessments, workplace inspections, audits, safety observations and control-effectiveness reviews.
  • Support the identification and management of critical risks and site safety risk registers.
  • Lead or contribute to incident investigations, including ICAM investigations where required.
  • Work with contractors and delivery partners to promote consistent safety standards and accountability.
  • Deliver safety training, inductions and toolbox talks.
  • Coach leaders and employees in risk management and safe work practices.
  • Monitor safety performance, identify trends and recommend practical improvements.
  • Contribute to the continued development of South East Water’s safety management system and proactive safety culture.

About you

You will bring experience as a Safety Advisor in a complex, high-risk or operational environment. Your background may include utilities, civil construction, infrastructure, engineering, transport, water, energy or another project-based industry.

You will ideally have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety, Occupational Health, Risk Management or a related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of OHS/WHS legislation, regulations and relevant standards.
  • Experience in hazard identification, risk assessment and critical-control management.
  • Experience across audits, assurance, compliance and safety systems.
  • Experience with incident investigations and ICAM methodology.
  • The ability to translate technical and legislative requirements into practical solutions.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, influencing and communication skills.
  • A collaborative and practical approach to safety leadership.
  • Sound judgement, resilience and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A current driver’s licence and the ability to travel to South East Water and delivery-partner sites.

Experience in psychosocial risk, employee wellbeing and broader safety culture initiatives will be viewed favourably, although strong technical, project and operational safety experience is the primary requirement.

Working environment

This is a visible and hands-on role involving engagement across capital project and operational sites, including active construction and live operational environments. You will undertake inspections, audits, control assessments, inductions and stakeholder engagement, with personal protective equipment required when visiting relevant sites.

The role is expected to involve approximately three days per week in the office, with travel across the Peninsula as required. You will also participate in an after-hours standby roster and provide emergency response and incident support when required.

South East Water offers flexible working arrangements, with the potential for compressed hours or a nine-day fortnight, subject to operational requirements.

Why join South East Water?

This is an opportunity to join an organisation delivering essential services to the community and contribute to practical improvements that protect people, support reliable operations and strengthen safety outcomes.

You will enjoy broad exposure across projects and operations, the opportunity to work with diverse stakeholders and the ability to make a genuine contribution to South East Water’s safety culture and maturity.
