- Play a pivotal role in advancing world-leading eye research through strategic operational leadership
- Partner with leading researchers and clinicians to translate scientific ambition into real-world impact
- Shape a high-performing research environment through stronger systems, collaboration and continuous improvement
The Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) is an internationally recognised medical research institute dedicated to preventing vision loss through discovery science, clinical research, public health and translation. Working in close partnership with the University of Melbourne, hospitals and industry, CERA brings together world class researchers and clinicians to improve eye health outcomes and deliver real world impact. With multidisciplinary programs spanning basic science through to clinical research, CERA continues to operate at the forefront of innovation, improving diagnosis, prevention and treatment of eye disease.
The Program Manager role has been created to drive major collaborative research initiatives that bring together leading clinicians, scientists and partners to tackle the biggest challenges in eye health. This role will help shape CERA’s future research portfolio by enabling larger, more connected and more ambitious funding opportunities.
Reporting to the Co-Chief Operating Officer and working in close partnership with and under the guidance of the Managing Director, the Program Manager provides operational leadership across designated research programs. The role works in close alignment with the Deputy Director and Clinical Research Leads. Acting as a critical connector between Clinical Research Leads and research support services teams, you will help build a more integrated and collaborative research environment. You will identify opportunities to align expertise across research programs, co-ordinate across functions (including finance, HR, research governance), support compliance and risk management as well as foster strategic partnerships, coordinate major research initiatives and position CERA to compete successfully for larger multi-disciplinary grants and funding opportunities. You will also facilitate translating research strategies into operational plans, oversee program delivery, manage budgets and grant expenditure, and strengthen workforce capability. This role is designed to allow Clinical Research Leads to focus on scientific leadership, while ensuring programs are well managed, sustainable and positioned for success.
To be successful in this role you will bring a postgraduate qualification within science, health, biomedical science or a related discipline, combined with demonstrated experience leading complex, multidisciplinary programs. You will have strong project management and organisational capability, with proven operational management experience within research, healthcare, higher education or similarly complex environments. You thrive on improving systems and processes to lift organisational effectiveness, bringing a strong financial and delivery mindset. A credible and emotionally intelligent leader, you are comfortable influencing without authority, building trust with clinicians and researchers, and driving outcomes through collaboration. You combine sound judgement and resilience with a hands-on approach, moving seamlessly between strategic planning and operational delivery to enable research excellence.
