The Opportunity

We have partnered with a large, global insurance organisation embarking on a multi-year transformation to redesign its operating model, portfolio management, sourcing strategy and delivery capabilities. This program will fundamentally reshape how work is prioritised, funded and delivered across multiple business portfolios, with a strong focus on SAFe-based agile ways of working, governance and transparency of value and spend.

As Program Director – Portfolio Management Workstream, you will lead the end-to-end design and implementation of a scalable, SAFe-aligned portfolio management approach that brings together business and technology, improves transparency of costs, capacity and benefits, and delivers proof-of-scale across priority portfolios in a global insurance context.

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will:

• Lead the Portfolio Management workstream, owning scope, outcomes, roadmap and operating rhythm.
• Stand up and refine portfolio governance (councils, forums, decision rights) to align business, technology and global delivery centres.
• Design and implement an integrated portfolio planning framework, balancing budget, capacity and benefits and synchronising local and global planning cycles.
• Maintain a clear portfolio backlog and master plan across portfolios, sequencing initiatives to minimise disruption to operations.
• Define and track portfolio-level KPIs and benefits, providing clear executive reporting and early-warning indicators for risk, cost and value.
• Partner with Delivery Management and Operating Model workstreams so methods, structures and tooling are aligned and scalable in a SAFe environment.
• Oversee portfolio-level performance reporting and dashboards (IT/change portfolio views, executive summaries) as a single source of truth.
• Work with sourcing, vendor management and finance to align portfolio planning with sourcing strategy and commercial constructs, driving outcome-based accountability.
• Coach senior leaders and portfolio teams in portfolio management practices and tools, role-modelling a “one team” culture across global locations.

About You

You are an experienced transformation leader who can move comfortably between C-suite conversations and detailed portfolio design.

You bring:

• 15+ years’ experience leading large, complex, technology-enabled transformation programs and/or enterprise portfolio management in global insurance or large financial services organisations.
• Proven delivery of SAFe / scaled agile portfolio management across multiple business lines, ideally in distributed onshore/offshore delivery models.
• A strong track record in standing up or maturing portfolio management functions (governance, planning, benefits, reporting) in complex environments.
• Experience operating within multicultural, global organisations, working across onshore/offshore, multi-vendor and global/local teams.
• Demonstrated ability to engage and influence C-suite and senior executives, simplifying complexity and creating alignment across business, technology and vendor stakeholders.
• Exposure to operating model, sourcing and service delivery model design, including global service delivery centres.
• Strong capability with portfolio/PMO tools and reporting (e.g. Jira, PPM tools, BI dashboards) and using data to drive decisions.
• Exceptional communication, facilitation and stakeholder management skills, with a pragmatic, hands-on and highly structured approach.
