Payroll is a critical component of their business, and they are seeking a capable and experienced Payroll Lead / Specialist to take ownership of this function.

About the Role
As the Payroll Lead, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily payroll operations, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of employee pay, and managing compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements. Leading a team of payroll professionals, you will guide work allocation, resolve escalated queries, and support the ongoing improvement of payroll processes and systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and supporting payroll team members in the execution of payroll tasks and processes
  • Acting as the primary escalation point for payroll-related queries from staff and managers
  • Overseeing the Payroll Inbox and ensuring enquiries are resolved promptly through a rotating roster system
  • Ensuring all payroll data, including master data changes and calculations, are accurately recorded and securely stored
  • Reviewing complex payroll calculations, including salary and superannuation, to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Managing the documentation and upkeep of payroll procedures and training materials
  • Delivering internal training and knowledge sharing across the team
  • Leading the preparation and coordination of annual payroll audits in partnership with HRC and auditors
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives and maintaining the team’s improvement tracker
  • Supporting the implementation of new payroll technologies, such as ServiceNow or similar platforms, to enhance query tracking and reporting

About You
To succeed in this role, you will bring extensive end-to-end payroll experience along with strong leadership and advisory capabilities. Your ability to manage complex payroll processes and mentor others will be key to your success.

We are seeking candidates with:

  • Proven experience in payroll operations and team leadership
  • Strong understanding of Australian payroll legislation, taxation, and compliance obligations
  • High level of attention to detail and a focus on accuracy
  • Excellent planning, organisational, and time management skills
  • Confident communication skills with the ability to advise stakeholders at all levels
  • Previous experience with payroll systems (Preceda advantageous) and HRIS platforms (Workday preferred)
  • Experience in payroll systems implementation or process improvement initiatives is highly desirable
