Microsoft Purview Technical Specialist

About the Role

We are seeking a Microsoft Purview Technical Specialist with strong hands‑on experience designing, configuring, and implementing Microsoft Purview capabilities within Victorian or Australian Government Microsoft 365 tenants.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in areas such as Microsoft Purview Information Protection, Data Loss Prevention, Records and Data Lifecycle Management, and alignment of technical controls to the ACSC Essential Eight maturity model.

Mandatory Experience

Candidates must be able to demonstrate practical implementation experience of Microsoft Purview workloads in a Victorian or Australian Government tenant, including evidence of policy design, deployment, and operational use.

Key Responsibilities and Technical Capabilities

Microsoft Purview – Information Protection

• Design, create, configure, and publish Sensitivity Labels to classify and protect information across:
• Microsoft Office applications
• SharePoint Online
• Microsoft Teams
• OneDrive for Business

• Apply encryption, content marking, access restrictions, and user experience controls aligned to government security requirements.

Data Loss Prevention (DLP)

• Design and implement Microsoft Purview DLP policies, including:
• Microsoft 365 DLP (Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams)
• Endpoint DLP for Windows devices
• Configure alerts, incident handling, and policy tuning to prevent accidental or unauthorised data disclosure.

Data Classification and Auto‑Labelling

• Implement auto‑labelling policies, including:
• Client‑side auto‑labelling
• Service‑side auto‑labelling for data at rest

• Configure conditions based on Sensitive Information Types, keywords, and trainable classifiers where applicable.

Data Lifecycle, Retention and Records Management

• Configure and manage Retention Labels and Retention Policies to support:
• Public Records Office Victoria (PROV) obligations
• Australian Government recordkeeping requirements

• Implement event‑based retention, disposition reviews, and defensible deletion.

Sensitive Information Types (SITs)

• Design and create custom Sensitive Information Types, including:
• Regular expressions
• Keyword dictionaries
• Document fingerprinting

• Align SITs to organisational and regulatory data classifications.

Security and Compliance Alignment

• Map Microsoft Purview controls and configurations to:
• ACSC Essential Eight
• Internal Information Security and Records Management frameworks

• Support audit preparation and compliance assurance activities.

Identity and Platform Knowledge

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), including:
• Authentication and authorisation considerations relevant to Purview
• Strong understanding of Microsoft 365 workloads:
• SharePoint Online
• Exchange Online
• OneDrive for Business
• Microsoft Teams

PowerShell and Automation

• Demonstrated proficiency in PowerShell, including:
• Automating deployment of sensitivity labels and policies
• Configuring Purview and Information Protection settings
• Supporting repeatable and auditable configuration processes

Desirable Attributes

• Experience working in Victorian State Government or Australian Government ICT environments
• Familiarity with government security policies, data classification standards, and records legislation
• Ability to translate governance, risk, and compliance requirements into effective technical controls
• Strong documentation and stakeholder engagement skills
