SEC is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects – the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.

Your role
As SEC’s Media and Communications Manager, you will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of SEC’s media and communications strategy, with a strong focus on building and protecting the organisation’s reputation across its strategic priorities. Key to the role is working closely with SEC’s executives and its Brand and Corporate Affairs team to plan and deliver a strong pipeline of media and communication opportunities that highlight’s SEC’s work delivering renewable energy and storage projects, retailing renewable electricity and behind-the-metre solutions for the Victorian Government and Victorian businesses, and supporting households to go electric to save on energy bills.

This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.

What you will do:

  • Proactive media strategy: Lead the development and delivery of SEC’s proactive media strategy to support and protect SEC’s reputation across its strategic focus areas including large-sacle renewable energy assets, C&I retailing and household electrification. Build relationships with key metro, business and trade media across SEC’s key spheres of work.
  • Develop pipeline of proactive media opportunities: Develop and maintain a 12-month forward plan/calendar of announceable milestones and proactive pitches to inform the public about SEC’s core activities, advocacy priroities and broader efforts to drive Victoria’s energy transition. Proactively generate stories the media will be interested in reporting.
  • Strategic narrative and message development: Work with internal stakeholders and external delivery partners to develop and evolve messaging to support SEC’s strategic narrative across a variety of different mediums including interview briefs and speaking points for media events.
  • Announcements, project milestones, and public engagement: Prepare public and stakeholder information to support major announcements, project milestones and other progress across SEC’s portfolio. This includes preparing for media events, keynote presentations, stakeholder and ministerial events, and community engagement initiatives.
  • Ministerial liaison: Brief portfolio Minister’s office and Department of Energy, Environment and Climte Action executives on key upcoming communications activities and respond to information requests. Faciliate SEC’s participation in key government processes including materials for Parliamentary Questions and the Public Estimates and Accounts Committee hearings.
  • Media and issues management: Identifying and address emerging issues, including across the regulatory and policy environment, and managing emerging issues. Prepare briefings and proactive and reactive materials, influencing and advising on approaches and responding to media requests.
  • Stakeholder and executive engagement: Build and maintain strong working relationships with key executives across the business as well as a variety of consumer, industry and energy trade media. Advise and mentor key executives to uplift media and comms capabilities across the organisation. Actively contribute as a member of the Brand and Corporate Affairs team and lead/collaborate with team to deliver outcomes in line with proactive media strategy.

Who you are:
Experience and Skills:

Must Have:

  • Seasoned media expert with a background and relevant tertiary qualification in journalism and/or public relations.
  • Experience leading or overseeing a small team, including providing advice, guidance, support and day to day direction.
  • Strong issues management exposure in complex organisations and industries.
  • Tenacious and self-motivated with to the ability to proactively chase opportunities and build media relationships.
  • Highly tuned radar for issues and a passion for staying across the media landscape and advising on opportunities.
  • Ability to think strategically with equal strength in implementation and delivery outcomes with close attention to detail and follow through.
