Situated just 6km from Melbourne's CBD, Maribyrnong City Council is a diverse and vibrant city undergoing significant change in population growth, redevelopment, gentrification, and a transitioning economy bringing an influx of new residents, businesses and opportunities. With a growing population approaching 100,000 residents, comes a need for increased infrastructure and services, greater connectivity and transport options, environmental sustainability, managed urban growth, liveability and improved community outcomes. Maribyrnong City Council is seeking a dynamic, contemporary people leader to help deliver on their vision for an inclusive, flourishing, progressive city that cares for both its residents and its environment.
Reporting to the Director Planning and Environment, this role will oversee the strategic and operational functions of the City Development Department to ensure efficient, timely, and professional service delivery aligned with best practices. It will provide high-level policy and professional advice to the Executive team and Council group on strategic and urban planning, urban design, and building services to support smart investment and enhanced city liveability, in line with the Council Plan and adopted strategies. The Manager will also play a key leadership role in the revitalisation of the Footscray CBD, ensuring alignment between cultural, urban, and economic priorities, and will support the delivery of major initiatives such as the Creative West project. This includes driving an ambitious cultural vision, securing sustainable funding, and navigating political and stakeholder dynamics to ensure Council delivers lasting impact for the diverse communities of Maribyrnong. The role will drive improved operational performance by fostering a culture of accountability, streamlining processes, and ensuring alignment with strategic priorities to enhance service delivery and outcomes.
To be considered for this role, you will hold Tertiary Qualifications in Urban Planning or similar related field, as well as demonstrated experience in a comparable role. You have a sound understanding of the planning and legislative requirements relevant to Council roles. You have successfully led and developed multidisciplinary teams within a political environment, you have fostered a collaborative, inclusive, and fun learning-focused culture that aligns with organisational values. You have solid stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build strong relationships and communicate clearly across diverse audiences. Additionally, you have managed and reviewed departmental functions to ensure they are effective, exemplary, and centred on community needs.
