Lead Payroll Officer

Accounting

About the Company

This organisation is a well-established, values-driven provider operating within a national framework, supporting a diverse workforce and community. Having experienced steady growth, the business is now at a stage where it is investing in strengthening its payroll function and creating a dedicated leadership role to drive compliance, efficiency and continuous improvement.

This is a newly created position, separating payroll from a broader shared services structure and giving it the focus it deserves.

About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Finance, the Lead Payroll Officer will take ownership of the end-to-end payroll function, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant processing across the organisation. You will lead a small team of two Payroll Officers and act as the subject matter expert for all payroll-related matters.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you will balance day-to-day processing with oversight, governance and improvement initiatives. The business operates one primary fortnightly pay run, along with a small monthly Director payroll and occasional out-of-cycle runs.

Key responsibilities include managing payroll operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and awards, overseeing reconciliations and reporting, and acting as the escalation point for complex queries. You will also play a key role in uplifting capability within the team, identifying training opportunities and keeping ahead of regulatory updates.

This role requires someone who can think commercially, identify efficiencies, and genuinely partner with business leaders.

The Benefits

  • $108,500 + super annually
  • Full salary packaging benefits available, making the salary commercially equivalent to $117 250 + super annually
  • 38-hour work week with flexible start and finish times
  • Work from home 2 days per week
  • Newly created role with the opportunity to shape the payroll function
  • Supportive leadership team and a growing organisation with purpose
  • Close to all public transport - bus, train & ferry

About You

You are an experienced payroll professional who knows how to run a compliant, high-volume payroll without needing your hand held. You take ownership, stay across legislative changes and are the type to proactively identify improvements rather than wait to be asked.

You bring strong technical payroll knowledge, including award interpretation. You are comfortable working with multiple systems and understand the nuances of integrating time and attendance data into payroll.

You have prior experience leading or mentoring staff and enjoy developing others, lifting capability and building a strong, accountable team culture.

Strong attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities will be key to your success in this role.
