Interim WHS Consultant – Governance & Compliance

Human Resources & Recruitment

Our client is a large, statewide public vocational education and training provider seeking an experienced WHS Consultant to provide practical governance, compliance and risk support on an interim basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced WHS, governance, risk or compliance consultant who can quickly understand a complex environment, work from existing frameworks and get important work moving.

About the opportunity
This is not a traditional frontline WHS advisory role, nor is it a greenfield assignment requiring a new framework to be created from scratch.

The organisation already has an existing WHS and safety management framework, templates and governance materials. The focus of this assignment will be to put the practical structure and delivery around that framework, including:

  • Reviewing existing WHS policies, processes, governance documentation and terms of reference
  • Identifying key gaps, priorities and opportunities for improvement
  • Strengthening practical WHS governance arrangements
  • Engaging with the WHS Committee, WHS Network and key stakeholders
  • Consulting on and implementing agreed governance processes
  • Working alongside an existing safety resource to align the safety management and governance frameworks
  • Providing clear updates to senior stakeholders
  • Identifying and escalating risk exposure early and appropriately
  • Preparing clear documentation and handover material for the permanent appointee

About the organisation
The organisation is a large, statewide public vocational education and training provider with a diverse network of campuses, trade training facilities, workshops, learning environments and corporate services.

It operates across a complex and highly governed environment, supporting a broad workforce and a wide range of students, industries and communities throughout Queensland.

About you
You will be an experienced consultant or practitioner with strong capability across WHS governance, compliance, risk or safety management.

You will ideally bring:

  • Experience working across WHS governance, compliance, risk or safety management
  • Strong policy, process and governance framework experience
  • Experience developing or reviewing terms of reference and committee structures
  • Confidence working with senior leaders, executives, boards or board subcommittees
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and consultation skills
  • The ability to translate frameworks and obligations into practical actions
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • A self-directed, pragmatic and outcomes-focused approach
  • Experience working in government, education, health, resources, mining or another complex organisation

Exposure to child safety legislative changes would be highly regarded but is not essential.

A relevant qualification in WHS, risk, governance, compliance, law, public administration or a related discipline is desirable. A Blue Card is not required for the role.

Working arrangements:

  • Mt Gravatt, Brisbane
  • ASAP start
  • Short-term interim assignment while permanent recruitment is completed
  • Full-time or part-time arrangements may be considered
  • Working hours to be agreed within a general 6.00am - 6.00pm window
  • Regular onsite presence required
  • Minimum three days onsite as a starting point for a five-day working week
  • Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are the preferred onsite days, although flexibility will be considered
  • No regular travel is expected
  • Consulting rate commensurate with experience and scope, with an equivalent salary guide of approximately 130,000–$150,000 plus superannuation

This role will suit someone who enjoys entering an organisation quickly, understanding what needs to be done and providing practical, credible support without requiring extensive day-to-day supervision.
