POSITION DESCRIPTION — Infrastructure Lead – Hosting (Wintel)

Location: Sydney (Macquarie Park) or Brisbane (Queen Street) – Hybrid, 3 days per week onsite

Employment Type: Permanent Salary:$160,000 – $180,000 + Super (flexible for the right candidate).

About the Organisation

A global leader in medical diagnostics, delivering pathology, radiology, and clinical services across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and North America. Technology plays a critical role in supporting clinical operations, patient outcomes, and regulatory compliance, operating highly available, mission-critical IT environments where stability, security, and resilience are essential.

About the Role

We are seeking an Infrastructure Lead – Hosting to act as the senior technical authority and escalation point across our enterprise hosting platforms.

This is a hands-on, principal-level engineering role focused on large-scale Windows Server and VMware environments. You will lead from a technical perspective — setting standards, guiding engineering decisions, and ensuring the platform remains secure, resilient, and operationally mature.

This is not a traditional people management role, but you will provide mentoring, technical leadership, and day-to-day guidance to the hosting team.

The Environment

You will be working across a complex enterprise hosting platform, including large-scale Windows Server estate (multi-version lifecycle), VMware vSphere clusters across multiple data centres, enterprise storage and backup platforms (SAN/NAS, Veeam, etc.), Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Group Policy, patch management and vulnerability remediation frameworks, disaster recovery and cross-site replication, hybrid integration with Azure (not cloud-first), and strong alignment to healthcare regulatory standards and security frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Escalation Act as the highest-level escalation point for complex hosting and operating system issues. Lead technical direction during major incidents in a 24x7 production environment. Provide deep troubleshooting expertise across Windows Server, VMware, and infrastructure layers. Review and validate technical solutions and designs.

Hosting Platform Ownership Own and govern the enterprise hosting platform across on-prem and hybrid environments. Define and enforce standards across Windows Server builds, patch management, VMware cluster governance, and security baselines. Drive consistency and reduce configuration drift across the estate.

VMware & Infrastructure Governance Oversee VMware cluster health, HA/DRS configuration, and lifecycle upgrades. Ensure storage, compute, and network integration is robust and scalable. Contribute to capacity planning and performance optimisation.

Disaster Recovery & Resilience Govern DR design, replication strategies, and failover capability. Lead DR testing and ensure runbooks and documentation are accurate and trusted.

Modernisation & Continuous Improvement Drive automation through PowerShell and configuration management. Improve operational maturity, monitoring, and platform reliability. Support gradual hybrid/cloud integration where appropriate.

Mentoring & Team Contribution Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers. Support knowledge sharing and uplift engineering standards. Contribute to on-call leadership and escalation pathways.

Stakeholder Engagement Partner with development, security, and infrastructure teams. Communicate technical risks and platform improvements to stakeholders. Work with vendors across VMware, storage, and infrastructure tooling.

Skills & Experience

Essential: Strong experience in enterprise Wintel environments at scale, deep expertise in VMware vSphere and hosting architectures, experience in 24x7 production environments, proven technical escalation and major incident leadership, strong understanding of DR and high availability design, experience with PowerShell automation and configuration management, solid grasp of security, compliance and governance frameworks, and the ability to lead technically and influence without formal authority.

Desirable: Experience in healthcare or regulated environments, exposure to hybrid cloud platforms (Azure), experience with enterprise storage platforms, and ITIL or service management experience.

What Success Looks Like

The hosting platform is stable, secure, and highly available. Engineers rely on you as the senior technical authority. DR capability is tested, trusted, and well-governed. Platform standards are clear and consistently applied. Operational risk is reduced while modernisation progresses. Strong collaboration exists across infrastructure, development, and security teams.
