- Newly created Senior Leadership role

The City of Wodonga is a progressive and community-focused regional Council, recognised for its commitment to innovation, service excellence and sustainable growth. With a strong track record of delivering meaningful outcomes for its community, Wodonga offers a collaborative and forward-thinking environment where people are empowered to lead, contribute and make a genuine impact. As an employer of choice, the organisation fosters a culture of flexibility, accountability and continuous improvement, making it an exciting place to build a purposeful career.
The City of Wodonga is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking General Counsel to establish and lead a contemporary in-house legal and governance function. Reporting to the Director Corporate Services, this role will play a pivotal part in uplifting governance maturity, addressing key gaps and reshaping how governance supports decision-making across the organisation. The General Counsel will bring a fresh, strategic lens—moving beyond administrative, low-value activities to embed robust, fit-for-purpose frameworks, processes and advice. The role will also support a transition from reliance on external legal providers to a more cost-effective in-house model, while working closely with executives and contributing to fast-paced organisational priorities. Based in Wodonga, the role offers flexible working arrangements, including one to two days on-site.
To be considered, you will be an intellectually curious and driven legal professional who thrives in complex, evolving environments and is motivated to build and improve systems from the ground up. Holding a Bachelor of Laws (minimum), you bring strong critical thinking and research capability, along with the ability to translate complex legal and governance issues into practical, actionable advice. While public sector experience is valued, candidates from the private sector with strong credibility and a desire to apply their expertise in a public sector context are encouraged to apply. You will be adaptable, commercially minded and motivated to make an impact—capable of operating at pace, influencing senior stakeholders and quickly building an understanding of the governance landscape.
This opportunity will suit someone looking to step into or grow within a senior leadership pathway while driving meaningful organisational change.
