- Lead the long-term asset planning for Victoria’s metropolitan, regional and light rail
- Build strategic asset maturity across a complex, multi-operator environment
- Shape future-ready infrastructure aligned with government policy and public value
The Department of Transport & Planning (DTP) brings together all transport modes to design, plan, build and operate Victoria's transport system. DTP delivers simpler, quicker, and safer journeys for all Victorians - connecting people and places to drive prosperity and liveability across the state. The Assets and Engineering Division (A&E) plays a vital role in enabling a safe, sustainable, and fit-for-purpose transport system. Through whole-of-life asset strategies, technical excellence, and sound policy, A&E ensures Victoria’s transport infrastructure is reliable, resilient, and future-focused.
Reporting to the Head of Assets and Engineering, the Director, Strategic Asset Management (Rail) will lead the development and implementation of best-practice asset management across the state’s metropolitan, regional, freight and light rail systems. This includes overseeing long-term asset planning for high-risk, high-value infrastructure such as signalling systems, rolling stock and civil assets, while integrating this into a coherent strategy across multiple operators including MTM, V/Line and Yarra Trams. With a team still in building phase and a maturing governance environment, this role will play a foundational leadership function - driving management systems development, improving audit readiness, supporting major procurement projects (including MR5), and embedding whole-of-life asset thinking across the Department. The Director will also act as a strategic advisor contributing to policy development and long-term investment prioritisation.
To be successful in this role you will be a seasoned asset leader, bringing deep expertise in strategic asset planning and asset lifecycle management in complex regulated environments - ideally in transport, utilities or linear infrastructure. You will be skilled in aligning engineering strategy with public policy objectives, navigating multi-stakeholder environments, and influencing across Government and Operator interfaces. Your experience building asset management systems, guiding teams through change, and preparing organisations for strategic change will position you for success in this high-impact, future-focused role.
This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of Victoria’s rail infrastructure assets and contribute to a transport system that delivers better outcomes for communities across the state.
