Director Assets, Operations and Sustainability - City of Hume

Government & Defence

  • Lead one of the largest and most visible Directorates for the Council
  • Drive performance, culture and outcomes in a complex public sector environment
  • Join a high performing executive team

Hume City Council is one of Melbourne’s largest and fastest-growing municipalities, serving a diverse and vibrant community in the city’s north. With a strong industrial and employment base, significant infrastructure investment and rapid residential growth, Hume plays a critical role in supporting Melbourne’s economic and social development. This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the largest and most visible Directorates at Hume City Council.

Reporting directly to the CEO and as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Director Sustainable Assets and Operations leads a workforce of over 330 FTE and is responsible for managing more than $6 billion in community assets. The portfolio sits at the centre of Council’s service delivery to the community and is a major strategic focus for the organisation, offering the opportunity to shape the next phase of growth, lift performance and make a tangible impact on the liveability, safety and sustainability of the municipality.

The role has end-to-end accountability for assets and operational services predominately delivered entirely in-house. This includes asset management and maintenance, roads, parks and open space, waste and landfill operations, sustainability and climate integration, and city safety services such as local laws, environmental health and emergency management. The position is highly visible and hands-on, requiring strong engagement with Councillors, unions, the community and government partners, while ensuring sound governance, proactive planning, financial discipline and safe, reliable service delivery across a complex operational environment.

To succeed, you will be a strong executive leader with the ability to lead large, multidisciplinary teams and ensure cultures of safety and performance. You will bring senior leadership experience from local government or a similarly complex public sector environment, with well-developed political acumen and confidence working with elected members. A technical engineering background is not essential; what matters is your ability to lead change, strengthen leadership capability, manage risk and deliver outcomes at scale.

This is a rare opportunity to join one of Melbourne’s largest and fastest growing municipalities in this executive leadership position.
