DER Commercial & Program Lead

Mining, Resources & Energy

Davidson is the proud recruitment partner of SEC Victoria as they accelerate Victoria’s renewable energy transition.

Do work that makes a difference
SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria’s transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria’s renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.

We have an exciting and ambitious road ahead with a focus on:

  • Investing in renewable energy and storage projects that accelerate the transition and deliver commercial returns.
  • Supporting households to go electric to reduce their emissions and energy bills.
  • Retailing electricity to Victorian Government operations and Victorian businesses to help them decarbonise.
  • Underpinning all of this is SEC’s work to support the renewable energy workforce our energy transition requires.

SEC is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects – the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.

Your role
Join the SEC in a pivotal, foundational leadership role helping shape Victoria’s renewable energy future. As the DER Commercial & Program Lead, you will lead the development and delivery of SEC’s Behind-the-Meter (BTM) Distributed Energy Resources (DER) program, driving innovative solar and battery solutions for Victorian Commercial & Industrial customers. This is a unique opportunity to build a program from the ground up, taking ownership from concept development and financial modelling through to commercial structuring, contract negotiation and deployment.

Ideal for a hands-on “player-coach” leader, this role will see you work across technical, legal and finance teams to deliver a scalable portfolio of renewable energy assets. You will play a key role in turning strategy into action, influencing commercial outcomes and supporting Victoria’s transition to a cleaner, more affordable energy future.

This role is a 12-month fixe term contract can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.

What you will do:
Core accountabilities include:

  • Lead the development of robust business cases for DER program investment approval by executives and government stakeholders.
  • Define the end-to-end operating model for DER deployment and ongoing operations.
  • Develop project and program financial models to support commercial and investment decisions.
  • Lead procurement activities for BTM assets, including negotiation and execution of EPC, O&M and vendor contracts.
  • Support the design and negotiation of innovative funding models, including PPAs and related commercial structures.
  • Oversee program budgets, schedules, milestones and deliverables from development through to operations.
  • Manage relationships with engineers, vendors, financiers and legal partners to ensure commercially balanced and bankable outcomes.

Who you are:
Experiences and Skills:

Must Have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Electrical/Power Systems), Business, Finance, Law or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in the energy sector, preferably with a proven track record in commercial or program management of behind-the-meter solar PV and battery storage (BESS).
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating high-value construction contracts and PPA structures. Familiarity with the "back-to-back" risks between offtake and construction agreements will be highly regarded.
  • A proven ability to lead cross-functional teams who may not report to you directly to meet aggressive deployment milestones.
  • Strong financial modelling skills (Excel) and the ability to translate technical performance data into commercial returns.
  • Experience in a start-up or a "new business" unit within a larger corporate where you had to create processes where none existed will be highly regarded.

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience within an electricity retailer, providing an understanding of billing, load profiles, and hedge integration.

An empowered workforce
A career with SEC means you’ll be joining a new and vibrant ‘for purpose’ government-owned renewable energy company that:

  • Empowers you to influence how we accelerate Victoria’s renewable energy transition and decarbonise our economy.
  • Inspires you through meaningful, challenging work in an environment that encourages leadership and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Supports your growth through career advancement and professional development opportunities.
  • Provides hybrid work arrangements, with around 3 days working in Melbourne or Morwell, with flexible work options to meet individual circumstances, providing greater choice and autonomy.
