The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development is seeking an exceptional leader to take on the pivotal role of Deputy Director-General, Georesources. This is a rare opportunity to help shape the prosperity of the state by overseeing one of Queensland’s most valuable economic pillars—its resources sector.
Reporting to a highly experienced Director-General, as Deputy Director-General – Georesources , you will provide strategic direction and authoritative advice across government and industry. Leading a high-performing team of over 450 professionals statewide, you will be at the helm of the Georesources Division, which plays a critical role in regulating the state’s $60 billion resources industry while also fostering growth, innovation and investment attraction across established and emerging sectors
This role sits at the intersection of policy and performance, regulation and opportunity. A key challenge—and a key opportunity—will be balancing the responsibilities of regulator with those of investment enabler. You will bring fresh thinking and vision to this complex dual mandate, helping to lift the division to its next phase of growth and impact. With a strong business model already in place, you’ll work collaboratively across the Department and with external partners to drive innovation, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and accelerate sustainable economic development. You will enjoy the challenge of applying a commercial lens to the sector.
You will play a senior leadership role in delivering major strategies (such as the Queensland Critical Minerals Strategy) and key government policy platforms. You will represent Queensland in national forums, shape long-term policy, and forge deep, influential relationships across government, industry and communities. Your leadership will support place-based approaches to economic diversification and regional resilience. You will also provide strategic advice and guidance to the Department’s Executives, the Minister and other senior stakeholders across Government and industry on matters relating to the Georesources portfolio.
We are seeking an executive with exceptional commercial and/or regulatory acumen, an inclusive leadership style, and a proven ability to operate in complex environments. Experience in the resources sector will be highly valued, as is the ability to inspire trust, champion reform, and lead with integrity in high-stakes stakeholder environments.
