Chief Executive Officer – Mission to Seafarers

CEO & General Management

  • Lead a respected welfare organisation dedicated to serving seafarers through care, advocacy and practical support.
  • Drive financial sustainability, and strategic partnerships across philanthropic, corporate and government sectors.
  • Lead the evolution of a unique social enterprise that amplifies community connection.

Mission to Seafarers Victoria is a long established Anglican mission and faith-based not for profit organisation providing welfare to seafarers visiting the Port of Melbourne. Anchored in a proud heritage of service, the Mission offers hospitality, practical assistance and compassionate support to crew men and women who spend their lives at sea, often far from home and family for up to 12 months at a time.

Through the work of its Chaplains, staff and more than 60 dedicated volunteers, Mission to Seafarers offers essential physical, moral and spiritual welfare to this often-invisible workforce keeping our globalised economy afloat. Operating from a heritage listed building that is open to the public, the facility includes a bar and beautiful function spaces that host a variety of events, generating revenue while strengthening community engagement. With clear strategic priorities and a committed Board, the organisation is focused on strengthening commercial viability, deepening stakeholder partnerships and enhancing its profile across the maritime, philanthropic and broader community sectors.

Reporting to the Board and working closely with the Chair, the Chief Executive Officer is accountable for the overall operational and financial performance of the Mission, ensuring delivery of agreed strategic objectives and annual budgets. The CEO will lead revenue generation initiatives to secure donations, bequests, grants and commercial sponsorships, while identifying new funding opportunities and cultivating enduring relationships with donors, industry partners, government agencies and community stakeholders. Internally, the CEO will provide strong leadership across finance, volunteer development and service delivery, fostering a culture that is inclusive, collaborative, accountable and caring. With two direct reports and oversight of a small multidisciplinary team and active volunteer base, the role requires a hands-on and pragmatic leader who can balance strategic thinking with operational execution. Financial stewardship, risk management, governance oversight and clear, timely reporting to the Board are central to success in this position.

To be considered for this role, you will bring a demonstrated track record in revenue generation across philanthropic, commercial and government sources, together with strong financial literacy and experience managing budgets and organisational performance. You have led multi-disciplinary teams and large volunteer cohorts in values-based or human centric environments and are confident working in partnership with a Board. An engaging and strong communicator, you build trusted relationships across diverse stakeholder groups and represent your organisation with integrity and purpose.

This role can be offered on a full-time or part-time basis and presents an outstanding opportunity for a senior executive ready to step into their inaugural chief executive position, or for an experienced CEO seeking a meaningful change of pace while continuing to make a tangible difference.
