The Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) is an independent statutory body established under the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act 1989. Its core mandate is to protect Aboriginal sacred sites across the NT, while facilitating land use and development through clear legal frameworks and strong partnerships.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the principal executive responsible for leading the organisation to deliver its statutory functions and strategic priorities. Accountable to the AAPA Board and the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, the CEO will provide expert cultural, legal, and policy advice, oversee compliance and enforcement of the Act, and ensure the Authority operates with independence, integrity, and credibility.
A highly capable and values-driven leader, you will bring deep knowledge of Aboriginal heritage protection and experience navigating complex legislative, political, and cultural frameworks. You will have a proven record in leading multidisciplinary organisations, driving policy reform, and delivering strategic and operational outcomes. Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills are essential, including the ability to build and sustain trust with Aboriginal custodians, land councils, industry stakeholders, and government.
Your career will demonstrate integrity, resilience, and sound judgement in politically sensitive and high-profile contexts. You will be recognised for fostering cohesive teams, strengthening organisational culture, and ensuring accountability in governance, risk, and financial performance.
This is a unique opportunity to lead one of the Northern Territory’s most important statutory authorities, safeguarding Aboriginal sacred sites while enabling responsible development and supporting the economic, social, and cultural advancement of all Territorians.
