Our client operates within a complex Commonwealth Government environment, supported by a Finance and Procurement Branch responsible for delivering high-quality financial management services across the Department.
The Chief Finance Officer function works closely with business areas to strengthen financial management, support informed decision-making and ensure financial risks are appropriately managed.
About the Role
As a Finance Business Partner, you will act as a key conduit between the Chief Finance Officer and business areas, delivering customer-focused financial reporting, advice and analysis.
Working closely with senior executives and key stakeholders, you will provide financial insight across departmental and administered functions, supporting effective business planning and sound strategic and operational decision-making.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing financial advice, analysis and assistance to senior stakeholders.
- Preparing monthly financial reports, variance analysis, commentary and full-year forecasts.
- Supporting budgeting, forecasting, costing and long-term financial planning.
- Undertaking financial analysis to support business planning, projects and investment decisions.
- Supporting month-end activities including accruals, prepayments and end-of-financial-year requirements.
- Monitoring forecasts and identifying emerging or material financial impacts.
- Identifying financial risks and issues and supporting robust business and finance processes.
- Delivering financial management services that support statutory compliance requirements.
- Building financial literacy and capability across the Department.
- Developing strong relationships between the CFO function and business areas.
About You
You are an experienced Finance Business Partner or accounting professional with strong technical capability across financial and management reporting. You are confident operating in a complex environment and can translate financial information into clear, practical advice for senior stakeholders.
You will bring:
- Demonstrated Finance Business Partner, financial accounting or management reporting experience.
- Strong project accounting experience, ideally involving IT projects within the public sector.
- Sound knowledge of accounting principles and experience within a public sector environment.
- Experience preparing budgets, forecasts and financial analysis aligned with the Commonwealth financial framework and relevant accounting standards.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify financial risks and opportunities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated stakeholder management and influencing capability.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to deliver quality outcomes within tight timeframes.
- The interpersonal skills to contribute effectively within a busy team environment.
Formal qualifications in accounting, finance or business, or relevant experience in public sector financial management or a similar financial management role, are essential.
CA or CPA qualifications, or progress towards these qualifications, are highly regarded, as is previous public sector finance business partnering and IT project accounting experience.
