About the Role
We are seeking an AO4 Land Research Officer to join the State Interests team in Brisbane. This role supports work that enables connection to country and access to land for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including matters relating to native title, land transfers and Indigenous Land Use Agreements.
You will undertake detailed land tenure research and analysis, working with spatial information specialists and other stakeholders to provide accurate information supporting native title claims, compensation claims and associated negotiations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Undertaking land tenure research, analysis and interpretation.
- Collating tenure, mapping and other information relevant to native title and compensation matters and Indigenous Land Use Agreements.
- Providing accurate research to support the determination of land tenure matters and escalating complex or sensitive issues where required.
- Preparing and contributing to briefs, reports and court documents.
- Researching, interpreting and applying relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
- Supporting engagement with government agencies, the National Native Title Tribunal, Indigenous groups, industry bodies and members of the public.
- Maintaining accurate records and producing reports and statistical information using departmental databases and information systems.
- Working collaboratively across the team, including undertaking peer review and supporting colleagues with relevant systems and processes.
About You
You will bring strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills, together with the ability to interpret detailed information and communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
To succeed in this role, you will demonstrate:

- The ability to interpret and implement legislation, policy and procedures.
- Confidence using, or the ability to quickly learn, information and database systems.

- Willingness and ability to travel, including to rural and remote locations where required.
Experience or an interest in planning, environmental science or management, spatial science, business, law or project management will be well regarded.
Experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, along with experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other digital applications, is highly desirable.
You must hold a current driver’s licence or be able to obtain one within six months of commencement and be eligible to work in Australia.

The assignment offers:
- Contract: 31 August 2026 to 31 August 2027.
- Extension: Option for a further 12 months.
- Location: 1 William Street, Brisbane.
- Hours: 40 hours per week, with standard business hours between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday.
- Exposure to complex land tenure, native title and Indigenous land matters.
