The SEC is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects – the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.

Your role
This is a growth opportunity for an ambitious Analyst looking to accelerate their career and build deep expertise in energy spot trading. Joining the SEC’s dynamic Trading team, you’ll immerse yourself in a rapidly evolving energy market while contributing real value from day one. You’ll work across physical markets, electricity derivatives, environmental certificate markets, and long‑term renewable offtake arrangements, giving you broad exposure to the full trading and contract management landscape.

As you develop, you’ll play an increasingly active role in supporting — and eventually executing — the team’s spot trading activities. This role is designed for growth, offering hands‑on learning, mentorship from experienced traders, and the chance to sharpen your analytical, commercial, and market decision‑making skills. The role includes occasional work outside of standard business hours to meet operational demands.

This role can be based in either SEC’s Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.

What you will do:

  • Market analysis: Monitor and interpret physical, forward, and environmental markets to forecast trends and inform trading decisions, including BESS performance analysis and SEC asset back‑testing.
  • Reporting: Build and maintain market, position, and contract reports using SQL, Databricks, and PowerBI to support ongoing trading activities.
  • Spot trading: Provide spot trading coverage and real‑time operational support for SEC‑traded generation and storage assets in the NEM.
  • Contract management: Support management of offtake and long‑term contracts, including tracking generation availability, meeting reporting requirements, and managing contractual obligations.
  • Risk and compliance: Help ensure strong governance by monitoring trading activity for compliance with internal and regulatory requirements and escalating potential issues.

Who you are:
Experiences and Skills:

Must Have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, Economics, Finance and/or another relevant specialisation
  • Solid understanding of NEM market design, pricing and wholesale electricity price drivers, with a strong desire to learn all aspects of trading and portfolio optimisation
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to collaboratively interpret data and modelling outputs and produce and distribute meaningful insights across the organisation.
  • Proficiency with Databricks and programming languages (Python, R and/or SQL) to support data processing and workflow development of large time-series datasets (e.g. prices, demand, weather).
  • Numerical and computing skills to support the development of accessible analytical and reporting tools including Advanced Excel, PowerBI, and/or Tableau.
  • Excellent attention to detail and data quality discipline (validation, reconciliation and documentation)
  • Excellent communication skills with internal and external stakeholders and ability to clearly present on outcomes of data analysis

Highly Desirable:

  • At least a year of experience working in the energy industry ideally in a NEM market participant (retailer/generator/gentailer)
  • Knowledge of electricity derivative markets and environmental certificate markets
  • Exposure to long-term/structured energy purchasing agreements and offtakes
