Davidson is working with a state government client who is seeking an experienced Director, Financial Accounting and Operations.


About the Role

As the Director, Financial Accounting and Operations, you will lead a large, multi-functional finance group responsible for delivering high-quality financial accounting, reporting, and operational services. Reporting to the Assistant Commissioner, Finance and Procurement Command, you will provide strategic leadership and expert financial advice to support organisational sustainability and performance.

This role plays a critical part in shaping a contemporary, client-focused service delivery model and ensuring financial practices align with legislative requirements, accounting standards, and organisational objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Financial Accounting and Operations Group, ensuring high-quality financial operations and advisory services.
  • Lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of financial policies, procedures and controls aligned with whole-of-government requirements and legislative obligations.
  • Oversee financial systems, ensuring data quality, integrity, and accessibility to support timely and accurate reporting and decision-making.
  • Lead the preparation of governance reports, annual financial statements and ad hoc reporting in compliance with statutory and accounting standards.
  • Direct financial accounting, taxation, transactional and asset management activities to safeguard financial resources and organisational assets.
  • Ensure robust asset accounting processes to effectively manage and report on a significant asset portfolio.
  • Establish and maintain effective financial risk, compliance, assurance and governance frameworks.
  • Provide oversight of key financial systems, ensuring efficient and compliant operations across trust accounts and associated services.
  • Drive a strong client service focus, building collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage service level agreements with external providers, including transactional, banking and travel services.
  • Build financial capability across the organisation to meet current and future operational and reporting needs.
  • Provide trusted, strategic financial advice to senior executives to support effective resource management.
  • Represent the organisation in key forums and develop strategic stakeholder relationships.
  • Lead and manage financial and human resources to ensure efficient and sustainable service delivery.
  • Foster a culture of high performance, continuous improvement and innovation.

About You

  • Extensive experience leading large, multi-functional finance teams within complex organisations.
  • Deep knowledge of public sector financial management, including accounting, reporting, taxation, asset management and transactional services.
  • Demonstrated experience driving and embedding transformational change.
  • Strong understanding of financial governance frameworks, legislation, policies and accounting standards.
  • Highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels.
  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams and foster a collaborative, performance-driven culture.
  • Professional qualifications such as CPA or CA are highly desirable.
