Davidson is partnering with our client, a state government organisation, to recruit an experienced Senior Finance Advisor to join their Financial Accounting function. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented finance professional to contribute to high-quality financial reporting, reconciliation, and advisory services within a complex public sector environment.


About the Role

As a Senior Finance Advisor, reporting to the Principal Finance Advisor (General Ledger), you will play a key role in delivering accurate financial accounting, reconciliation, and reporting services. You will support compliance with financial policies and legislative requirements while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and strong stakeholder relationships.

  • Prepare and manage fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations, including Paid Parental Leave Scheme (PPLS), payroll, Superstream, long service leave, and Human Resource Information System (HRIS) accounts.
  • Complete journals, maintain clearing accounts and registers, and ensure compliance with financial management policies and standards.
  • Monitor, review, and reconcile the general ledger, including accruals and provisions supported by appropriate documentation to ensure accuracy and strong internal controls.
  • Assist in the preparation of interim and 30 June financial statements, including analytical review of material movements.
  • Prepare quarterly Tridata reporting submissions to Treasury and contribute to other statutory and management financial reporting requirements.
  • Provide accurate advice and operational support on PPLS refunds, adjustments, and transfers, as well as long service leave and other financial matters.
  • Support clients through correspondence, open item management in SAP, and the provision of advice on financial policies, procedures, and operational issues.
  • Review financial policies, practices, and procedures to identify opportunities for business improvement and enhanced internal controls.
  • Use digital and data analysis skills to provide insights and recommendations that support improved financial outcomes and modern work practices.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment by assisting colleagues and researching and resolving complex accounting and general ledger issues.
  • Participate in business improvement initiatives and project teams as required.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders across regions, divisions, and business units, as well as external agencies.
  • Undertake other duties as directed by the Principal Finance Advisor (General Ledger).


About You

  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and practices relating to financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial support services, including general ledger management and financial reporting.
  • Proven experience using financial systems, spreadsheets, and associated database applications (SAP experience highly regarded).
  • Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide considered advice and recommendations.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management and prioritisation skills to meet deadlines with competing priorities.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with clients, stakeholders, and service providers.

Qualifications and Other Requirements

  • A degree or equivalent in accounting, commerce, or business administration is highly desirable.
  • Membership of CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, or a similar professional body is highly regarded.
  • A criminal history check will be undertaken prior to appointment due to access to sensitive information.
