Contract: Till end of February 2027

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Functional Consultant – Industrial Historian to join a major IT/OT separation and system migration program within the gas and energy utilities sector.

You will act as the functional lead for industrial historian migration activities, working across internal IT/OT teams, SCADA engineers, operations, external transition partners and system integrators.

The role will focus on the migration, lift-and-shift, re-platforming and functional validation of industrial historian environments into a new standalone environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead functional activities across industrial historian migration and separation initiatives.
  • Analyse and document current-state historian environments, including tag structures, naming conventions, AF models, interfaces, SCADA/PLC/DCS data sources and downstream consumers.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to define target-state historian architecture aligned with enterprise architecture and OT cyber standards.
  • Support data extraction, tag migration, interface re-pointing, validation and cutover activities.
  • Work closely with SCADA and OT teams to maintain historian continuity during control-room and telemetry transitions.
  • Validate data accuracy following migration, including sampling rates, compression, exception rules and tag quality.
  • Support integrations with enterprise platforms including SAP/Maximo, GIS, work management, reporting and analytics systems.
  • Provide functional guidance around historian security, access controls and audit requirements.
  • Develop test plans, UAT scripts and operational acceptance criteria.
  • Engage with operations, engineering and compliance stakeholders to ensure historian data meets business and regulatory requirements.
  • Produce technical and functional documentation and support knowledge transfer and handover to BAU teams.

About You

You will bring:

  • 7+ years' experience working with industrial data historians, ideally within gas, energy, utilities or mining.
  • Strong functional expertise in at least one major historian platform, preferably OSIsoft/AVEVA PI System, or alternatively AspenTech IP.21, Wonderware Historian or GE Proficy Historian.
  • Experience with OT data acquisition protocols such as OPC DA/UA, Modbus, DNP3 or MQTT.
  • Strong understanding of historian tag architecture, compression rules, data quality and event frames.
  • Previous experience supporting historian migration, consolidation or environment separation projects.
  • Understanding of OT cybersecurity requirements and secure data flows.
  • Knowledge of gas distribution, transmission, pipelines or mining operations.
  • Understanding of operational telemetry, compressor/pipeline data, alarms and regulatory reporting.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills across IT, OT, engineering and operations.
  • Ability to translate complex historian concepts into clear business language.
  • Excellent documentation, communication and problem-solving skills.

Desirable Experience

  • PI AF, PI Vision, PI Interfaces or PI Integrators.
  • Cloud-based historian deployments across Azure or AWS.
  • Transitional Service Agreements/Environments (TSA).
  • Utilities regulatory compliance and operational reporting.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, control narratives and instrumentation diagrams.

What Success Looks Like

  • Historian migration completed with zero data loss and minimal operational disruption.
  • All interfaces successfully re-pointed and validated.
  • Historian data is accurate, reliable and fit for operational use.
  • Internal teams are trained and able to operate the new environment independently.
  • Enterprise-standard documentation and knowledge transfer are completed.
  • Smooth transition from the legacy environment to the new standalone platform.
