About the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan

Toowoomba Hospital Emergency Department (ED)

Queensland’s hospital system, like many across the nation and round the world, are facing greater demand and pressure than ever before.

This is driven by our growing and ageing population, and compounded by pressures on primary, aged and disability care.

To help combat this, the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan was developed. It aims to deliver better, quicker care to all Queenslanders over the next six years and will include a significant recruitment and capital works program.

The plan will support a larger workforce, with more than 9,000 health workers to be recruited.

Major improvements from the plan include building three new hospitals, expanding 11 hospitals, adding thousands of new hospital beds, and delivering a new Queensland Cancer Centre.

Delivery by the Health Capital Division

The Heath Capital Division will lead delivery of the capital works elements of the Health and Hospitals Plan.

There are three major programs of capital works under the Health and Hospitals Plan (depicted on the maps below), plus a satellite hospitals program.

Capacity expansion program

The capacity expansion program, valued at $9.785 billion, will deliver around 2,220 extra beds across the state over the next 6 years.

This is in addition to the 869 beds being delivered through current expansion projects. The program will deliver new hospitals in Bundaberg, Coomera and Toowoomba, a new Queensland Cancer Centre and expand 11 hospitals across Queensland.

Accelerated infrastructure delivery program

The accelerated infrastructure program, valued at $229.7 million, will deliver 289 hospital beds across seven projects over the next two years.

These are in the Metro South, Gold Coast, West Moreton and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Services and will use off-site construction and standard designs to reduce time to commissioning.

Building rural and remote health program

The building rural and remote health program, valued at $943.5 million will replace ageing infrastructure across a range of hospital and health services, over seven years.

These are in Torres and Cape, North West, Cairns and Hinterland, Mackay, Darling Downs, Central Queensland, Townsville, West Moreton and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services.

Satellite hospitals program

The Satellite hospitals program is a $280 million commitment to deliver seven new facilities to provide better access to healthcare for local communities, in convenient settings, without having to travel to major hospitals for care.

The locations for the new satellite hospitals are Redland, Caboolture, Kallangur (Pine Rivers), Tugun (Gold Coast), Ripley (Ipswich), Bribie Island and Eight Mile Plains (Brisbane South).
