In May 2020, the City of Glen Eira joined the growing movement calling for urgent action to address climate change and declared a climate emergency. Council also committed to ambitious new carbon emission reduction targets:

  • Zero net corporate emissions by 2025
  • Zero net community emissions by 2030

This has led Council to create the role of Manager Climate and Sustainability. Reporting to the Director Planning and Place, the Manager Climate and Sustainability will join the senior leadership team and will demonstrate commitment and alignment to the high performance, organisational values and behaviours and innovation that currently exists in the team and organisation.

The Manager Climate and Sustainability will lead the development and delivery of Council's Environmental Sustainability Strategy and the action / business plans aligned to this. They will play a key organisational leadership role, working across Council to ensure that sustainability and climate change considerations are embedded into all aspects of the business. The role will provide expert and timely advice to Council, the Executive, the Sustainability Advisory Committee and community on legal compliance and best practice in the areas of environmental sustainability and waste management. The Manager, Climate and Sustainability will represent Council on the Clayton Landfill joint venture, and on the South East Councils Advanced Waste Processing Project.

Productive partnerships with other government agencies, stakeholders and community groups will be key, as will the ability to maximise opportunities presented through joint initiatives and external grant funding.

To be considered for this enviable opportunity, you will be a proven strategic leader with demonstrated experience driving contemporary practices relating to environmental sustainability, waste and climate change within a large complex customer / community focused organisation. You have excellent business acumen, are politically astute and demonstrate high levels of emotional intelligence. You are highly regarded for your exceptional stakeholder engagement skills both internal and external, and have a proven track record in inspiring staff and driving high performance in your teams. You hold relevant tertiary and post-graduate qualifications in a related discipline.
