Job Description

  • Flexible days/hours - 0.6 - 0.8 FTE

  • Commercial / Contract law focus

The Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG) is a Victorian State Government Statutory Body responsible for coordinating and facilitating the delivery of waste management and resource recovery across metropolitan Melbourne. MWRRG's vision is to create an integrated approach that incorporates social, economic and environmental considerations, creates connections, provides expertise to build capacity and knowledge, delivers policy objectives and outcomes and enables best practice solutions for councils, industry and the community.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Legal Counsel will advise on legal, governance, and probity practices. You will provide leadership and expertise in commercial and contract law, statutory interpretation and administrative law, review contracts for legal integrity, and manage legal issues that arise. You will also be the key liaison between the Group and a panel of external legal advisors.

This newly-created and much anticipated position will play a critical role in the success of the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group during what is an extremely busy and pivotal time in the industry. With the Recycling Victoria policy announced earlier in 2020 and impending changes to the Environment Protection Act, MWRRG plays a key role in setting Victoria up for success. The Legal Counsel will support the delivery of key social, economic, and environmental outcomes.

A values-based and forward-thinking leader, you are a pragmatic operator with 6+ years post-admission experience. You will be highly respected for your collaborative and influential approach, and have significant experience in contract law. Knowledge of competition law will also be advantageous. You have the capability to work at both a strategic and operational level, providing legal advice to the Executive and holding internal and external stakeholders to account.
