Reporting to the General Counsel you will play a pivotal role in providing legal and governance advice across the breadth of Council services and operations. As the Legal Counsel you will carry out any power, duty or function as delegated under the Local Government Act 2020 and provide accurate specialist and proficient advice to internal stakeholders across the organization. Applying your strong drafting skills to various matters including commercial contract drafting, tenders, planning & environment, property, leases, building & construction, procurement and IT, you will ensure Council is supported in an efficient manner and effectively negotiate and resolve issues. As the City of Stonnington's internal legal function continues to evolve, you will recommend opportunities for Council to improve regulatory maturity and introduce innovative workflow processes. This position may also occasionally require acting as a delegate for the General Counsel in their absence, working directly across the Executive team and with elected members.

You will bring demonstrated experience as a legal professional, with an ability to effectively engage stakeholders of all levels to build relationships and establish trust. With a strong consultative approach, you have experience embedding good decision making practices and governance frameworks within an organisation, and operate with a high level of integrity and discretion. You have established experience providing a range of legal advice within corporate/government environments and excellent analytical, drafting and research skills, with an ability to find pragmatic solutions to complex problems. Essential to success in this role is the ability to thrive in a fast paced, changing environment, with a high level of political nous and resilience. Admission as a practitioner of the legal profession with demonstrated experience equivalent in the status of Associate or above in a law firm is essential for this role.
