Job Description

The Office of Industrial Relations is a key contributor to the government's strategic objectives in the areas of work health and safety, electrical safety, workers' compensation, industrial relations and labour hire regulation. In partnership with stakeholders, they strive to achieve the lowest rate of work-related and electrical fatality, injury and disease in the nation, improved workers' compensation regulatory services and a fair industrial relations framework in Queensland.

Working to achieve the vision of safer and healthier Queensland workplaces the Director, Psychological Health, Specialised Health and Safety Services will be accountable for leading the planning, development and implementation of strategies to safeguard workers and the general public across the state.

The role leads the Psychological Health unit, a specialised team of health and safety experts that deliver on the Office of Industrial Relations Mentally Healthy Workplaces Strategy. As the Director Psychological Health, your role will include but won't be limited to:

  • Leading, coordinating and monitoring the services provided by the Psychological Health unit ensuring that they are aligned with strategic objectives of the Office of Industrial Relations.
  • Provide expert direction, guidance and leadership to improve the department's services, programs and initiatives related to workplace mental health.
  • Lead and direct teams and undertake research, planning and analysis of workplace mental health initiatives to support whole of government, national and OIR activities.
  • Provide expert advice to the Executive Director, Deputy Director-General, Director-General, and Minister concerning trends, potential risks and emerging matters related to workplace mental health.
  • Represent OIR and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland at high-level government, standards development and industry forums where professional qualifications and expert technical knowledge are necessary.
  • Represent the department in a variety of high level forums and advocate on issues relating to workplace mental health.
  • Actively participate in the promotion of a discrimination free workplace culture that values equity and diversity and represent the department in a variety of high level forums and advocate on issues relating to workplace mental health.

In order to be successful in your application you will have demonstrated effective strategic leadership within a team of expert health professionals and you will possess a four year degree in a health related field from an accredited tertiary institution. Although not mandatory, possession of a Masters or Doctoral degree in Organisational Psychology, or other appropriate speciality, from an accredited tertiary institution would be highly regarded as would other qualifications related to workplace health and safety. Critically, you will be able to show the following attributes:

  • Demonstrated and proven superior knowledge, expertise and skill in the principles and practices related to contemporary workplace mental health practices.
  • Demonstrated high level ability to lead the implementation of a wide range of complex initiatives and/or reforms related to workplace mental health.
  • Proven leadership, management and coordination skills, with demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams and processes to achieve significant outcomes within time and cost limitations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the legislation, research, best practice principles as they apply to workplace mental health, and a capacity to contextualise this knowledge within various industries.
  • Demonstrated high level communication, interpersonal, and relationship skills with demonstrated high level analytical, writing and presentation skills, as demonstrated in the preparation of reports, submissions, strategy documents, public communication materials, and briefings regarding complex strategic issues.
