PrimeSafe is the Statutory Authority responsible for regulating the safety of red meat, poultry and seafood in Victoria. PrimeSafe has the primary objective of providing assurance of safe, wholesome meat, poultry and seafood for all consumers. The organisation is also responsible for the regulatory management of pet food. The Board currently consists of nine members, including the Chairperson. The Board is appointed by Cabinet via the Minister for Agriculture.
The role of the Board is to provide leadership and strategic guidance for PrimeSafe and to oversee management’s implementation of PrimeSafe’s strategy. The Board works as a team and meets on a regular basis. The Chair must ensure that they can devote sufficient time and commitment to properly perform their role and duties on behalf of PrimeSafe. 
Key responsibilities of the Board include (but are not limited to):
  • Oversee the development and ongoing oversight of the strategic/corporate plan, including strategic direction and performance to meet Victorian Government objectives
  • Manage business risks
  • Approve annual and long-term budgets and operational plans
  • Monitor and assess performance across the Authority in line with the Minister for Agriculture’s expectations
  • Consider social, ethical and environmental impacts of PrimeSafe’s activities
The Chairperson will ideally have previous Chair experience of a Board and/or Committee or be an individual with significant Board experience, who is ready to progress to a Chair role. The candidate will require an appreciation of what it takes to work effectively in a public sector environment and ideally come with some exposure to regulated industries. Passionate about stakeholder engagement, the Chair will be able to work with a diverse range of parties in the public and private sectors and will take a practical approach to corporate governance.
