Job Description

  • Growth Area Council
  • Pathway role to becoming a Director
  • Exceptional future focused leadership team
Are you a Manager Planning looking for that next career step but haven’t quite made the leap to Director Level just yet? This role could be the perfect next step for growing your career and elevating your future career options beyond what they are now. If you are passionate about leading teams to provide exceptional customer service, building strong relationships with stakeholders and delivering outcomes for the community we want to speak with you!

Baw Baw Shire Council has partnered with Davidson Executive & Boards to recruit an Executive Manager Planning for the organisation and are looking for the very best talent for this exciting opportunity.

Baw Baw Shire Council is located approximately one hour east of Melbourne at the gateway to the Gippsland region. Supporting a municipality of more than 48,000 residents, including many small and remote communities, the region is experiencing exponential growth and expects to provide services to more than 70,000 people by 2030. This growth has been spurred on due to the region’s close proximity to Melbourne, fantastic schools, affordable housing, snow fields and world-class hiking and biking tracks.

As the Executive Manager Planning, you will work closely with the Director Planning and Development and build out your team through attracting, recruiting and selecting qualified Planners to join the organisation. You will drive a strong focus on development of your current workforce and ensure staff are empowered, engaged and supported to grow personally and professionally.

Leading a broad technical portfolio with teams that includes Strategic Planning, Community Planning, Statutory Planning, and Priority Development you will build a high performance team culture that works cohesively and collaboratively.

With the State Government currently completing a Planning Scheme review that includes Baw Baw Shire, you will contribute to this strategic activity and also review the Precinct Structure Plan. Additionally, you will lead an Industrial Land Needs Analysis to pro-actively consider planning needs for now and the future when it comes to land for industrial use.

Given a number of strategic decisions are to be made, you will need to have a strong understanding of how your decisions will impact the community and be able to make decisions using a solid evidence base.

Finally, you will need to bring a focus on continuous improvement and enhance how each of the parts of your team fit together to improve efficiency and effectiveness when it comes to workflow, process and ultimately outcomes.

To be successful in the role, you must be a Qualified Planner and having an understanding of regional areas will be important. Exposure to Growth Areas would be advantageous given the current and predicted growth of the region.

You must bring a track record of experience in leading teams, developing staff and building high performance workplace cultures with a customer focus and possess a pro-active approach in your own style and the way you operate.

At Baw Baw Shire Council, you have a great Councilor group and Executive Team to work with and it will be important you bring strong skills in building relationships and effectively engaging key stakeholders.
