Today, the MAV is a driving and influential force behind a strong and strategically positioned local government sector. Their role is to represent and advocate the interests of local government, lobby for a 'fairer deal' for councils, raise the sector's profile, ensure its long-term security and provide policy advice, strategic advice, capacity building programs and insurance services to local government. This key role of Director, Policy and Advocacy reports to the CEO and will be responsible for confidently representing the organisation at key local, State and Commonwealth government forums. Critical to the role will be the Directors ability to strategically undertake evidence-based research; identify trends and issues and formulate advocacy and policy priorities for the benefit of local government and the communities the sector serves. The Director will provide strategic advice to the CEO, Executive leadership team, the Board and the local government sector. Furthermore, the Director will enhance communication internally and externally with key stakeholder groups while motivating and empowering the MAV Policy team.
This role is critical in shaping the future direction of the MAV and will suit a strategic and experienced Policy and Advocacy Director. You will be confident in providing considered advice to a CEO and Board and maintain an impressive track record for undertaking evidence-based research to formulate advocacy and policy priorities. With impressive written and verbal communication skills, you are known for your ability to enhance relationships with key stakeholder groups and to empower your team to success. You will have experience working in local government, State Government, a statutory authority or the not for profit sector (or related). Furthermore, an appreciation of the complexities and nuances of working in a small organisation are highly regarded qualities.
