Job Description

Queensland’s racing industry makes a substantial contribution to the State’s economy and is a significant employer of tens-of-thousands of Queenslanders. The industry also plays an important role in galvanising communities, particularly in rural and regional areas, as people come together to celebrate the iconic sport of racing.

The organisation Racing Queensland (RQ) is a statutory body established under the Racing Act 2002. Its primary purpose is to promote, enhance and provide a platform to service the industry across three codes of racing: Thoroughbred, Greyhound and Harness.

RQ’s vision is to connect people through the thrill of racing, and its mission is to be Queensland’s favourite sport and Australia’s best sporting jurisdiction. The Commercial department can bring that vision to life through the provision of targeted and innovative commercial strategies.

The Opportunity The racing industry is currently undergoing significant change that includes the introduction of a new Point of Consumption Tax (POC) which was  effective as of the 1st October 2018, a significant investment in asset replenishment (major projects) and tracks and facilities upgrades (minor works) as well as the renegotiation of media rights.

Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer who will mentor the successful candidate around strategic leadership, RQ is seeking an experienced commercial leader to develop, manage and lead a high performance commercial and analytics team. The non-executive General Manager Commercial will manage all internal/ external commercial partnerships and contracts on behalf of RQ.

The Success Profile
You will be an experienced leader with a demonstrated ability to deliver significant business performance uplift through the formulation and implementation of targeted commercial strategies.

You will have a relevant tertiary qualification in finance or business/commerce and a track record of leading, coaching and motivating a team to deliver results. You will possess financial and contract management capability and demonstrate superior interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships, navigate complex issue resolution and achieve strategic objectives.

You are highly experienced in commercial contract negotiation and will be comfortable dealing with complexity in a fast-paced environment and delivering within tight timeframes. This opportunity would suit a driven individual seeking to make the transition into their first General Manager level role.
